Cañon City will hold a community open house on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, for residents who want to learn more about the planned 3rd Street Connector and weigh in before the project moves into later design and regulatory stages.
The meeting is scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 128 Main Street, Cañon City, CO 81212. The city says the open house will provide project details, an opportunity to ask questions and a chance for the public to submit comments.
What the 3rd Street Connector would include
The project is designed to create a pedestrian corridor along the west side of 3rd Street. It would link the Riverwalk Trail to Main Street, addressing pedestrian safety and improving connections between those destinations.
Planned work includes a dedicated sidewalk on the west side of 3rd Street, crosswalks, landscaping and pedestrian wayfinding signage. Together, those elements are intended to create a clearer route for people walking between the trail and Main Street.
Funding and project timeline
The construction phase has received a $540,000 Transportation Alternative Program grant. The city is responsible for a $135,000 local match, bringing the total construction-phase funding to $675,000. The project’s design was funded separately with city dollars at an estimated cost of $80,000.
The grant funding comes from the federal government’s fuel tax through the Highway Trust Fund. The Colorado Department of Transportation manages and distributes the Transportation Alternative Program funding.
The city intends to have the design finalized near the end of 2026. After that, final plans involving railroad-track crossings will be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission for review. The city says that review can take anywhere from six to 18 months.
Construction is currently anticipated for winter or spring 2028, but that schedule depends on resolving any issues raised during the Public Utilities Commission process.
