Drivers in Cañon City should prepare for a larger North 9th Street closure beginning Monday, Aug. 17. The city said the closure will extend to the south side of Harding Avenue as work advances north on the 2A N 9th Street project.
The update, posted Aug. 14, says crews will begin removing the remaining asphalt between Phay Avenue and Harding Avenue on Monday. The city warned that increased truck traffic is expected in the area while that work is underway.
What construction crews will do next
After asphalt removal, construction is scheduled to continue with installation of a new water main and related services. The project will then move into localized improvements to curbs, sidewalks and alleys before crews prepare the roadway for paving.
The work affects the North 9th Street corridor as the project progresses toward its next paving milestone. Residents and other people traveling near Harding Avenue, Phay Avenue and the surrounding streets should allow for the expanded closure and heavier construction traffic.
Target date for the next paving phase
Phase 3 paving, covering North 9th Street from Fairview Avenue through the Phay Avenue intersection, is currently targeted for Sept. 1, 2026. The city’s notice presents that date as a target rather than a guaranteed completion date.
