Residents in Cañon City have several infrastructure and public-service updates to track in August, including the reopening of a section of North 9th Street, a water-quality update, scheduled street maintenance and a City Council discussion about drought-related water issues.
North 9th Street section fully open
The city reported that Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the 2A North 9th Street project between Mystic Avenue and Meadows Avenue are complete. The roadway and sidewalks are now open to vehicles and pedestrians south of Woodlawn Avenue.
The project has been a continuing city update. A previous notice said work on the same stretch, from Mystic Avenue to Meadows Avenue, was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. Another city notice described the work as the reconstruction of North 9th Street.
Water and drought discussions scheduled
The city’s calendar lists a special City Council meeting for Monday, Aug. 10, focused on water quality, water bills and water availability related to drought. The police department’s webpage also carries a city notice titled “Geosmin Confirmation Water Quality Update,” dated Aug. 8.
The webpage displays Stage 1 water restrictions as being in effect. It also shows a Stage 2 fire ban notice and identifies the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District in connection with the fire-ban information. The supplied notice does not provide additional details about the restrictions or fire-ban requirements.
A community meeting listed for Tuesday, Aug. 11, has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date. The calendar separately lists the “Advancing Cañon City Economic & Development Summit” as a community meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Thursday, Aug. 13.
Street maintenance and public meetings
The city’s contractor for the 2026 Street Resurfacing Project, identified in the notice as the A-1 Chip Seal project, is scheduled to begin crack sealing Monday, Aug. 10. The notice does not specify which streets will be treated or describe expected traffic impacts.
Other meetings listed for August include the regular City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 17; the Cotter/Lincoln Park Community Advisory Group meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18; and the Public Art Committee meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The advisory group meeting is described as hybrid, with virtual and in-person participation.
The city also says the Centennial Park Splash Pad reopened Saturday, July 11, after a City Council vote. Its regular operating hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., although the notice says operations may be limited if drought conditions worsen.
