Drivers in Cañon City should prepare for a full closure of North 9th Street between Oak Avenue and Candlewood Drive beginning Wednesday morning, Sept. 23, 2026. The closure marks the final stage of the 2A North 9th Street Reconstruction Project.
The city said North 9th Street will remain fully open to traffic south of Oak Avenue once the closure begins. The restriction affects the section between Oak Avenue and Candlewood Drive, where crews are completing remaining construction work.
Work scheduled through October
Pavement markings up to Oak Avenue are scheduled for installation Tuesday, Sept. 22, weather permitting. The final stage of water main and service installations is anticipated to be completed by Friday, Sept. 25.
The project’s final paving phase is anticipated to take place during the week of Oct. 5. Overall completion remains on track for Oct. 14, 2026, according to the city’s Sept. 21 project update.
What the closure means
North 9th Street traffic will not be able to use the section between Oak Avenue and Candlewood Drive while the final construction stage is underway. The city’s update identifies the open segment south of Oak Avenue, giving drivers a defined point at which the roadway remains accessible.
The update was posted Sept. 21 through the Cañon City News Flash system under the title “N 9th Street Project Update: September 21st.” The schedule for markings, utility work, paving and overall completion remains subject to the conditions identified by the city, including weather for the Sept. 22 pavement-marking work.
